Surah Al Muzzammil Ayat 1 Tafseer

Para 29 - تَبٰرَكَ الَّذِیْ

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

73.1-4

یٰۤاَیُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُۙ (1) قُمِ الَّیْلَ اِلَّا قَلِیْلًاۙ (2) نِّصْفَهٗۤ اَوِ انْقُصْ مِنْهُ قَلِیْلًاۙ (3) اَوْ زِدْ عَلَیْهِ وَ رَتِّلِ الْقُرْاٰنَ تَرْتِیْلًاﭤ(4)

Kanz ul Iman Kanz ul Irfan

English translation of Kanz-ul-Imaan

O you who wraps himself (in a shawl i.e. the Prophet Muhammad). Stand up (for prayer) during the night except some part of the night. Half the night, or even a little less than that. Or increase a little on it, and recite the Qur'aan delightfully in slow distinct stages (i.e. each letter of the Qur'aan must be pronounced distinctively and correctly).

Commentary

In this verse, qiyām refers to the supererogatory night prayer (tahajjud). During the formative period of Islam, this prayer was obligatory for the Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم and his nation due to these verses of Surah al-Muzzammil. Later, it was decreed as preferred (mustaḥabb). However, according to a narration, it remained obligatory for the Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم.

This means to recite the Quran calmly so that each letter is distinguishable, whilst also being mindful of pausing at the required points, its diacritics, and the elongation of letters.
