Surah Al Qalam Ayat 18 Tafseer

Para 29 - تَبٰرَكَ الَّذِیْ

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

68.18-32

وَ لَا یَسْتَثْنُوْنَ(18) فَطَافَ عَلَیْهَا طَآىٕفٌ مِّنْ رَّبِّكَ وَ هُمْ نَآىٕمُوْنَ(19) فَاَصْبَحَتْ كَالصَّرِیْمِۙ (20) فَتَنَادَوْا مُصْبِحِیْنَۙ (21) اَنِ اغْدُوْا عَلٰى حَرْثِكُمْ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ صٰرِمِیْنَ(22) فَانْطَلَقُوْا وَ هُمْ یَتَخَافَتُوْنَۙ (23) اَنْ لَّا یَدْخُلَنَّهَا الْیَوْمَ عَلَیْكُمْ مِّسْكِیْنٌۙ (24) وَّ غَدَوْا عَلٰى حَرْدٍ قٰدِرِیْنَ(25) فَلَمَّا رَاَوْهَا قَالُوْۤا اِنَّا لَضَآلُّوْنَۙ (26) بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُوْمُوْنَ(27) قَالَ اَوْسَطُهُمْ اَلَمْ اَقُلْ لَّكُمْ لَوْ لَا تُسَبِّحُوْنَ(28) قَالُوْا سُبْحٰنَ رَبِّنَاۤ اِنَّا كُنَّا ظٰلِمِیْنَ(29) فَاَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلٰى بَعْضٍ یَّتَلَاوَمُوْنَ(30) قَالُوْا یٰوَیْلَنَاۤ اِنَّا كُنَّا طٰغِیْنَ(31) عَسٰى رَبُّنَاۤ اَنْ یُّبْدِلَنَا خَیْرًا مِّنْهَاۤ اِنَّاۤ اِلٰى رَبِّنَا رٰغِبُوْنَ(32)

English translation of Kanz-ul-Imaan

And (they) did not say, 'If Allah wills.' So, a twister (i.e. severe storm) from your Lord completed its round (destroying the harvest) whilst they were sleeping. So, in the morning it became like a destroyed fruit garden. Then, they called out to each other at daybreak. That 'Go to your farms in the early morning, if you want to pluck (fruit).' So, they walked while whispering to one another. That 'Today, no needy person should enter your garden at all.' And they proceeded early in the morning, assuming they have power over their intention (to prevent the poor taking fruits therefrom). Then when they saw it (i.e. the devastated garden), they said, 'We have indeed strayed.' 'Rather, we have become ill-fated.' The most reasonable amongst them said, 'Did I not tell you that why do you not glorify (Allah)?' They said, 'Glory be to our Lord; indeed, we were unjust.' Now, one approached the other (while) blaming. They said, 'Woe to us! Indeed, we were rebellious.' 'Hopefully, our Lord may give us a better replacement (i.e. garden) than this; we turn towards our Lord.'

Commentary

This garden was called Ḍardān. It was situated six miles on the way to the Yemeni city of Sanaa. Its owner was a pious man who would distribute the fruits of the garden to the poor. After his death, his three sons inherited it. They discussed amongst themselves that the estate was little and that the family members were many, and so if they also continued to give in charity like their father, they would become poor. Hence, they swore that they would visit the garden early in the morning before people wake up and harvest it lest the poor find out. However, they forgot to say “اِنْ شآءَ اللّٰہ”.

This is in reference to the fire that was sent by the command of Allah Almighty in the night due to the sons’ ill-intentions; it devoured the garden. The garden continued to burn till morning, until it was nothing more than ashes as dark as a moonless night. The sons were completely unaware of this. When they woke up early in the morning, they began to say to each other that if you wish to harvest the garden, then go to it before the daybreak. Therefore, they went towards the garden and were whispering to one another that no poor person should enter the garden today. Believing that they could actualise this, they left early in the morning.

When these people reached the garden and saw that it had been burnt and was empty of fruits, they said: “We have surely arrived at a different garden, as our garden is full of fruits.” Upon contemplating and looking at its surroundings, they realised that this was indeed their garden, and they said: “We have not forgotten the way. Rather, by intending to prevent genuinely poor people from taking its fruits, we have deprived ourselves of its fruits.” From this, we learn that depriving people of what they are entitled to is a cause for significant loss. Therefore, everyone who is entitled to something should be given their right, and one ought to refrain from violating other people’s rights.
