Surah An Nahl Ayat 116-117 Translation Tafseer

Para 14 - رُبَمَا

سورة النحل

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

16.116-117

وَ لَا تَقُوْلُوْا لِمَا تَصِفُ اَلْسِنَتُكُمُ الْكَذِبَ هٰذَا حَلٰلٌ وَّ هٰذَا حَرَامٌ لِّتَفْتَرُوْا عَلَى اللّٰهِ الْكَذِبَؕ-اِنَّ الَّذِیْنَ یَفْتَرُوْنَ عَلَى اللّٰهِ الْكَذِبَ لَا یُفْلِحُوْنَﭤ(116) مَتَاعٌ قَلِیْلٌ۪-وَّ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ اَلِیْمٌ(117)

Kanz-ul-Irfan

And do not say, “This is unlawful and this is lawful,” as your tongues utter lies lest you should ascribe a lie to Allah. Those who ascribe lies to Allah do not triumph.[1] There is little enjoyment and there is painful punishment for them.

Commentary

In the age of ignorance, people would declare some things to be lawful and other things to be unlawful themselves and then they would attribute it to Allah Almighty. This has been prohibited here and it has been declared as ascribing lies to Allah Almighty; it has been stated that those who ascribe lies will not triumph. Those who declare lawful things, such as sweets distributed on the occasion of Mawlid, Fātiḥah for the deceased, gatherings to commemorate pious predecessors (Giyārwīn, ʿUrs) and other forms of gifting reward—for which there is no prohibition in the Shari‘ah—as unlawful should take heed from this verse. Declaring such things to be unlawful in Islamic law is akin to ascribing a lie to Allah Almighty.
