Surah Ash Shura Ayat 69-70-71 Translation Tafseer

Para 19 - وَ قَالَ الَّذِیْنَ

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

26.69-70-71

وَ اتْلُ عَلَیْهِمْ نَبَاَ اِبْرٰهِیْمَﭥ(69) اِذْ قَالَ لِاَبِیْهِ وَ قَوْمِهٖ مَا تَعْبُدُوْنَ(70) قَالُوْا نَعْبُدُ اَصْنَامًا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عٰكِفِیْنَ(71)

Kanz-ul-Irfan

And recite to them the account of Ibrāhīm. When he said to his father (uncle)[1] and his nation, “What do you worship?”[2] They said, “We worship idols, then we remain before them in devotion.”

Commentary

Here, “father” does not refer to the biological father of Prophet Ibrāhīm عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام, rather, it refers to his paternal uncle, Āzar, who was an idolater.

Despite being aware of the nation’s idolatry, Prophet عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام asked this question to make it clear to the people that the objects which they worship are not worthy of worship in the slightest, for they can neither hear nor benefit nor harm.
