Surah Al Baqarah Ayat 61 Tafseer

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

2.61

وَ اِذْ قُلْتُمْ یٰمُوْسٰى لَنْ نَّصْبِرَ عَلٰى طَعَامٍ وَّاحِدٍ فَادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ یُخْرِ جْ لَنَا مِمَّا تُنْۢبِتُ الْاَرْضُ مِنْۢ بَقْلِهَا وَ قِثَّآىٕهَا وَ فُوْمِهَا وَ عَدَسِهَا وَ بَصَلِهَاؕ-قَالَ اَتَسْتَبْدِلُوْنَ الَّذِیْ هُوَ اَدْنٰى بِالَّذِیْ هُوَ خَیْرٌؕ-اِهْبِطُوْا مِصْرًا فَاِنَّ لَكُمْ مَّا سَاَلْتُمْؕ-وَ ضُرِبَتْ عَلَیْهِمُ الذِّلَّةُ وَ الْمَسْكَنَةُۗ-وَ بَآءُوْ بِغَضَبٍ مِّنَ اللّٰهِؕ- ذٰلِكَ بِاَنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا یَكْفُرُوْنَ بِاٰیٰتِ اللّٰهِ وَ یَقْتُلُوْنَ النَّبِیّٖنَ بِغَیْرِ الْحَقِّؕ-ذٰلِكَ بِمَا عَصَوْا وَّ كَانُوْا یَعْتَدُوْنَ۠ (61)

Kanz ul Iman Kanz ul Irfan

English translation of Kanz-ul-Imaan

And when you said, 'O Moosa, we will never remain patient with one (type of) food, so pray to your Lord that (instead of Manna and Salwa) He brings forth for us what the earth grows; some spinach, and cucumber, and wheat, and lentil, and onion.' He (Moosa) said, 'Do you demand that which is inferior in exchange for that which is superior? Well, go down to Egypt or to any city; there you will get that which you have asked for.' And humiliation and poverty were levied upon them and they returned towards the wrath of Allah; this was the recompense of this; that they would refuse the verses of Allah and martyr the Prophets unjustly; this was (also) the recompense of their disobedience and transgression.

Commentary

It was not a sin for the Israelites to demand spinach, cucumber, or these other foods; however, turning away from the blessings of Mann and Salwā, which required no exertion, (by expressing an inclination to earthly produce) was a demonstration of low-mindedness. When one has a connection to the greats, his heart, mind and judgement should reflect this.
