Surah Al Baqarah Ayat 62 Tafseer

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

2.62-63

اِنَّ الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَ الَّذِیْنَ هَادُوْا وَ النَّصٰرٰى وَ الصّٰبِـٕیْنَ مَنْ اٰمَنَ بِاللّٰهِ وَ الْیَوْمِ الْاٰخِرِ وَ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلَهُمْ اَجْرُهُمْ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْۚ-وَ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَیْهِمْ وَ لَا هُمْ یَحْزَنُوْنَ(62) وَ اِذْ اَخَذْنَا مِیْثَاقَكُمْ وَ رَفَعْنَا فَوْقَكُمُ الطُّوْرَؕ-خُذُوْا مَاۤ اٰتَیْنٰكُمْ بِقُوَّةٍ وَّ اذْكُرُوْا مَا فِیْهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُوْنَ(63)

English translation of Kanz-ul-Imaan

Undoubtedly, amongst the believers, in addition the Jews, the Christians and the star worshippers (after abandoning their previous religions); those who have true faith in Allah and in the Last Day (i.e. believing in Islam completely) and do good deeds; their reward is with their Lord, and for them is neither any fear nor any grief. And (remember) when We took a covenant from you and raised the (Mount) Toor above you (because of you breaking the covenant, and We said), 'Take and hold firmly whatever (i.e. the Book) We give you, and memorise what is therein, in the hope that you may attain piety.'

Commentary

Here, there is an apparent compulsion to fulfil the oath; remember, there is no compulsion in embracing faith; however, after accepting the religion, one is obligated to adhere to its laws. Let this be understood through the example of how a government does not force an individual to enter its country, but when one does enter, the government does compel him to abide by its laws.
